Caroline Polachek
Caroline Polachek is an American indie-pop singer, songwriter and record producer from New York City. Formerly the vocalist of the band Chairlift, she released the first project under her own name, Pang, in 2019, and her sophomore album, Desire, I Want To Turn Into You, in 2023.
Pang
October 18th, 2019
Polachek named her album Pang after the bursts of adrenaline that jolted her out of sleep. She describes this as an internal thing, the sudden shock of emotion that “pricks you emotionally from the inside.” But it’s corporeal, too; you can’t say the word “pang”—or sing it, as Polachek does on the title track—without a quick release of breath, somewhere between a gasp and a sigh. This album centers on her vocals: a little sophistipop, a little ambient, and a little from the charts. Her usual lyrical themes recur: living unexpected dreams, getting away with something sneaky-fun, tears in public and in oceans.

Desire, I Want To Turn Into You
February 14th, 2023
Desire can be volatile, excruciating, wonderful, and cruel—but above all, it keeps us going. We want and want and want until we die, these small hopes urging us across the vast expanse of our lives. Caroline knows too well that falling in love suffuses you with possibility, makes a boring world briefly beautiful. And so, as a nod to desire’s transformational power, her album’s cover displays her on all fours on the grimy subway, lunging forward with a ravenous look in her eyes. On one end of the car is the rat race; on the other end, sand—a mirage of paradise. Her sophomore album is a transformative pop experience, a passionate, richly melodic odyssey into the darkest corners of love.
